40/4 Chair

The 40/4 stacking chair, designed by David Rowland and popularized in the early 1960s, has been a ubiquitous feature at the California Institute of the Arts since its founding in 1969. Paint splattered, graffiti’d and worn, the chairs can still be found in use on campus, as well as in many an artist studio scattered across Los Angeles.

For the installation at ICA a stash of multi-colored vintage 40/4 chairs was borrowed from our friends at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, where they are used in classrooms and rehearsal spaces.
